Several partners shared their concerns about our current default like emoji 👌 (eg: this post), so we gave it a thought and came to the following conclusion.
While this phenomenon and reaction may not be that widespread and a tiny portion of our members may perceive this emoji as a symbol of white supremacy, this still may make some folks from different communities feel uncomfortable and not welcomed in our product. And this is not good. One of our core values is inclusiveness, so we proactively decided to change our default like emoji.
After digging through different emoji catalogues, trying 🙏 and ✌️and 🖖 and 🤝 and 🤘 and 👏 and even 🦄 we landed on our final candidate. Meet our new default like emoji! 🥁 Drumroll... 🥁
Here is it: 🙌
The meaning of this emoji is "two hands raised in the air, celebrating success or another joyous event", as taken from https://emojipedia.org/raising-hands/. This is also a very humble emoji, praising all the work our members are doing helping different communities across our ecosystem.
What do you think of it? Are there any negative connotations you can think of?
I do understand that we all have our subjective biases, but let's focus on specific known negative associations.
We also are going to add like emoji customization feature in the coming weeks. So you'll be able to replace it with whatever you want, including 👌, 🖖 and even 🦄
We are changing the like emoji for this specific community to give it a try and if we won't find any significant reasons to stop the rollout, this change will go live soon for everybody.
